Possible Causes
Failed heater element assembly, Open high-limit thermostat or thermal cutoff, Faulty NTC temperature sensor, Wiring issue between heater and control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit. Heating components can retain heat; allow time to cool before touching.
- Confirm airflow: Clean the lint filter thoroughly. Check the exhaust duct (if vented model) for lint buildup or crushing. Poor airflow can overheat and trip safety devices.
- Check drying settings: Ensure you are using a heated dry program, not an air-fluff or fan-only mode.
- Access heater assembly: Remove the rear panel (or lower rear cover, depending on RCA model). Locate the heater housing attached to the drum or air duct.
- Inspect wiring: Look for burnt connectors or broken wires at the heater, thermostats, and NTC sensor. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
- Component testing (for technicians): With the unit unplugged, test the heater element, high-limit thermostat, and thermal cutoff for continuity using a multimeter. Replace any open components.
- When to replace parts: If the heater element is open, replace the heater element assembly. If the element is good but a thermostat or cutoff is open, replace the high-limit thermostat/thermal cutoff kit. If temperature readings are erratic, replace the NTC temperature sensor.
