Possible Causes
Open or shorted water temperature sensor, Faulty dryer exhaust thermistor (combo-shared sensor bus), Damaged sensor wiring harness, Control board sensor input failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit. For dryer-related checks, also turn off gas supply on gas models.
- 1. Identify which sensor is referenced: Consult the tech sheet for your specific Speed Queen combo model to see if Er4 refers to wash water NTC, dryer thermistor, or both.
- 2. Access the sensor: For washer NTC, remove the rear panel and locate the sensor in the outer tub or inlet. For dryer thermistor, access the blower housing or exhaust duct.
- 3. Inspect wiring: Check the harness and connectors for burns, corrosion, or loose pins. Reseat connectors.
- 4. Measure resistance: Using a multimeter, measure sensor resistance at room temperature and compare to Speed Queen specifications. An open or very low resistance indicates a bad sensor.
- 5. Replace faulty sensor: Install a new OEM temperature sensor/thermistor, ensuring good contact and correct mounting.
- 6. Control board check: If sensors and wiring are good but Er4 persists, the control board's sensor input may be defective and require replacement.
