Possible Causes

Blocked drain pump filter or impeller, Clogged Fisher & Paykel drain hose or standpipe, Faulty drain pump motor, Foreign object lodged in pump housing

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the washer. Water may spill when hoses are removed; have towels and a shallow pan ready.

  • Check drain hose: Inspect the drain hose at the back of the washer for kinks or crushing. Ensure the hose is not inserted too far into the standpipe (should be about 150 mm / 6 in).
  • Clear clogs: Remove the drain hose from the standpipe and lower it into a bucket to see if water flows freely by gravity. If not, the hose may be blocked; flush it with water or replace.
  • Access pump area: On many Fisher & Paykel top loaders, tilt the machine back and access the pump from underneath. On front loaders, remove the lower front panel or rear panel as per service manual.
  • Inspect pump: Disconnect power leads and hose clamps from the drain pump. Check for coins, bra wires, or lint blocking the impeller. Rotate the impeller by hand; it should turn freely.
  • Test pump electrically: With a multimeter, measure pump coil resistance. If open or out of spec, replace the pump.
  • Reassemble and test: Refit hoses securely with clamps, reinstall panels, plug in the washer, and run a drain/spin cycle.
