Possible Causes
Shorted drive motor windings, Failed motor control board (speed control), Damaged wiring between motor and control
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the washer before accessing the motor or control boards.
- Access the drive motor: Remove the rear panel to expose the drive motor at the bottom rear of the tub. Inspect the motor and belt for obvious damage.
- Check wiring harness: Inspect the multi-pin connector at the motor and the harness leading to the motor control board (if separate). Look for burnt pins or broken wires.
- Test motor windings: Disconnect the motor and use a multimeter to measure resistance between windings according to the wiring diagram. A shorted or open winding indicates a bad motor that must be replaced.
- Inspect motor control board: On models with a separate motor control (inverter) board, locate it near the base or side of the cabinet. Look for burnt components or cracked solder joints.
- Replace failed component: If the motor tests good but E51 persists, replace the motor control board or main control board (depending on design). If the motor is defective, replace the drive motor and re-tension the belt.
- Test spin and tumble: Reassemble, plug in, and run a spin-only cycle to confirm proper motor operation and that E51 is cleared.
