Possible Causes
Overloaded drum, Binding drum bearings, Shorted motor windings, Faulty motor control board current sensing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before mechanical inspection.
- Check for overload: Ensure the washer is not consistently overloaded with heavy items like rugs or large blankets. Run a test spin with an empty drum.
- Spin drum by hand: With the washer unplugged and belt removed, spin the drum by hand. It should rotate smoothly and quietly. Grinding or stiffness indicates bearing or tub support issues.
- Inspect motor and belt: Check that the belt is not too tight or misaligned. Inspect the motor for overheating signs or burnt smell.
- Test motor windings: Use a multimeter to check motor winding resistance. Shorted windings will cause overcurrent and require motor replacement.
- Replace motor control board if needed: If mechanical components and motor test good, the motor control board may be misreading current. Replace the board.
- Verify with test cycle: Reassemble and run a spin-only cycle with no load, then with a small load, to confirm E54 is resolved.
