Possible Causes

Stuck or jammed door lock mechanism, Failed door lock solenoid, Control board not sending unlock signal, Wiring issue between control and lock

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the washer. Do not force the door open with tools; this can damage the door and lock.

  • Allow cool-down: Wait 2–5 minutes after the cycle ends; some models delay unlocking while the drum stops and internal temperature drops.
  • Power reset: Unplug the washer for 5–10 minutes, then plug back in and attempt to start and then cancel a cycle to trigger an unlock.
  • Manual release: On many GE Profile front-loaders, there is a manual release tab near the door lock behind the front panel or gasket. With power off, gently pull the tab to mechanically release the lock.
  • Inspect lock assembly: Once the door is open and power is disconnected, remove the front gasket clamp and access the lock. Check for broken plastic, burnt smell, or loose wiring.
  • Replace lock if defective: Install a new GE-compatible door lock assembly if the mechanism is seized or the solenoid is open. If a new lock does not resolve E42, the main control board may require professional diagnosis.
