Possible Causes
Open or shorted thermistor, Loose thermistor connector, Damaged wiring harness to sensor, Control board misreading sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the washer before accessing the tub or sensor wiring.
- Reset control: Disconnect power for 5–10 minutes, then retry a cycle. Transient sensor errors can sometimes clear.
- Inspect wiring: Locate the thermistor (often mounted in the outer tub or near the heater). Check that the connector is fully seated and wires are not cut or pinched.
- Replace thermistor: If wiring looks good and E61 persists, replace the temperature sensor with a GE-compatible thermistor. This usually involves removing a retaining clip or screw and swapping the sensor.
- Control board check: If a new thermistor does not resolve the error, the main control board may be misreading the sensor and should be evaluated by a technician.
