Possible Causes

Failed inlet water temperature sensor (thermistor) in inlet valve assembly, Loose or corroded thermistor wiring harness, Control board misreading thermistor signal, Inlet valve assembly internal failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Unplug the washer and turn off both hot and cold water supply valves before servicing.

Step-by-step:

  • Power reset: Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug back in and try a rinse or normal cycle. If E22 returns, continue.
  • Check water temperature supply: Ensure both hot and cold faucets are fully open and hoses are not kinked. GE thermistor readings can be affected if only cold or only hot is supplied.
  • Access the inlet valve: Remove the top panel (usually screws at the back) and locate the water inlet valve assembly where hoses connect.
  • Inspect wiring: Check the small thermistor wires and connector on the inlet valve. Reseat the connector and look for corrosion, broken wires, or loose pins.
  • Test thermistor: With a multimeter set to resistance (ohms), measure across the thermistor pins (refer to service manual for exact pins). At room temperature, you should see a stable resistance (commonly 10–50 kΩ). If open (OL) or shorted (near 0 Ω), the thermistor is bad.
  • Replace inlet valve assembly if faulty: If the thermistor is defective or the valve is leaking, replace the entire water inlet valve assembly. Transfer hoses one at a time to avoid mix-ups, and ensure screens are clean.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the top panel, restore water and power, and run a test cycle to confirm the error is cleared.

When to call a technician: If the thermistor tests good but E22 persists, the main control board may be misreading the sensor and should be diagnosed by a professional.
