Possible Causes
Mechanical failure of door lock mechanism, Broken door lock motor or solenoid, Faulty door lock position switch, Control not sending unlock signal
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the washer. Water may be present inside; be prepared with towels.
- Manually unlock door: On many GE front-load models, there is a manual release tab on the door lock assembly accessible by removing the lower front access panel or pulling down a colored tab near the lock from inside the boot. Pull gently to release the door.
- Drain water: Use the drain filter access (if equipped) or lower the drain hose into a bucket to remove water before further work.
- Inspect door lock: With the front panel or boot removed, inspect the lock for broken plastic parts, burn marks, or loose connectors.
- Check wiring: Ensure the harness is firmly connected and not damaged.
- Replace door lock: If the lock is physically damaged or fails continuity tests on its motor/solenoid and switches, replace it with the correct GE door lock assembly.
- Control check: If a new lock does not resolve E42, the control board may not be sending the unlock signal and should be tested by a professional.
