Possible Causes
Failed motor tachometer sensor, Loose or damaged motor harness, Faulty inverter or motor control board, Debris or damage on motor tach ring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the washer before accessing the motor or control boards.
- Reset: Unplug for 5 minutes, then run a spin-only cycle. If E46 returns, continue.
- Access motor: Remove the rear panel to expose the drive motor and belt (front-load) or bottom panel (top-load high-efficiency models).
- Inspect harness: Check the wiring harness from the motor to the control/inverter for loose connectors, chafed insulation, or broken wires. Reseat all connectors.
- Check tach sensor: On many GE motors, the tach sensor is integrated. Inspect the motor shaft and tach ring for damage or heavy debris.
- Test motor windings: Use a multimeter to check motor winding resistance per the service manual. If open or shorted, replace the motor.
- Replace motor or inverter: If the motor tests bad, replace the motor assembly. If the motor tests good but E46 persists, the inverter/motor control board may be faulty and should be replaced or professionally tested.
