Possible Causes
Failed user interface (UI) board, Loose ribbon cable between UI and main control, Moisture or detergent residue on UI, Main control not recognizing UI
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the washer before removing the control panel.
- Power reset: Unplug for 5 minutes and plug back in. If the panel remains unresponsive and E61 persists, continue.
- Inspect UI connections: Remove the control panel (usually screws at the back or under trim). Check the ribbon cable and connectors between the UI and main control for secure fit and corrosion.
- Clean contacts: If safe to do so, gently clean ribbon contacts with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Allow to dry completely.
- Check for moisture: Look for signs of water or detergent intrusion around the panel. Address any leaks from the dispenser or top cover.
- Replace UI board: If the UI shows physical damage, missing segments, or unresponsive buttons, replace the GE user interface/control panel assembly.
- Control board check: If a new UI does not resolve E61, the main control board may be at fault and should be professionally diagnosed.
