Possible Causes

Clogged drain pump filter, obstructed drain hose, failed drain pump motor, kinked or improperly installed standpipe

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Disconnect power and be prepared for water spillage when opening the pump area. Use towels or a shallow pan.

Step-by-step checks:

  • Check drain hose: Inspect the hose at the back of the washer for kinks, crushing, or freezing. Ensure the hose is not inserted more than 4–6 inches into the standpipe to prevent siphoning.
  • Clean pump filter: On many KitchenAid front-load models, remove the lower front access panel (3 screws at bottom). Locate the drain pump clean-out cap. Place a pan under it and slowly unscrew the cap to drain water. Remove debris (coins, lint, socks) from the filter and pump cavity.
  • Inspect pump impeller: With the filter removed, reach in and gently spin the impeller. It should turn freely and not be broken or wobbly.
  • Check for hose blockages: Detach the tub-to-pump hose and pump-to-drain-hose and inspect for clogs (small garments, buildup). Reinstall securely with clamps.
  • Test pump operation: Restore power, select a drain/spin cycle, and listen for the pump. If it hums but does not move water, or is silent, the pump may be failed.

When to replace: If hoses are clear and the pump receives power but does not run or is noisy, replace the drain pump assembly with the correct KitchenAid part.
