Washer will not start a cycle, display shows F01 and beeps, sometimes relay clicking from control area.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the washer or switch off the breaker before removing any panels. Capacitors on control boards can hold a charge; avoid touching exposed contacts.
Step-by-step:
- Power reset: Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug back in and try a rinse/drain cycle. If F01 returns immediately, continue.
- Check outlet and supply: Verify the outlet has 120 VAC with a meter and that the plug is tight. Avoid extension cords.
- Access main control (CCU): Remove the top panel (typically 3 screws at the back, slide back and lift). The CCU is usually mounted at the rear or side under the top.
- Inspect for damage: Look for burnt spots, melted areas, or a burnt smell on the CCU. Check the large relays for discoloration or cracking.
- Check harness connections: One at a time, unplug and firmly reseat each connector on the CCU, especially the power input and motor/control connectors. Look for loose pins or corrosion.
- Isolate shorted loads: Disconnect the motor control board (MCU) harness from the CCU, then power up. If F01 disappears but the drum won’t run, the MCU or motor circuit may be shorted.
- Replace CCU if needed: If visual damage is present or F01 persists with all loads disconnected, replace the main control board with the correct Maytag part number for your model. Transfer any wiring one connector at a time to avoid miswiring.
When to call a technician: If you are not comfortable working around live voltage or diagnosing control boards with a multimeter, have a qualified appliance technician perform the repair.
