Possible Causes
Worn agitator dogs or splines, Broken agitator shaft coupler, Loose drive belt (belt-drive models), Failed transmission output for agitation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the washer before removing the agitator or accessing the drive system.
- 1. Check agitator movement: Try to turn the agitator by hand. If it spins freely without moving the basket, the internal dogs or splines may be worn.
- 2. Remove agitator: Pull off the fabric softener cap, remove the bolt, and lift the agitator out. Inspect the dogs or splines for wear. Replace worn parts.
- 3. Inspect coupler (if equipped): On some models, a plastic coupler connects the agitator shaft to the transmission. Replace if cracked or stripped.
- 4. Check belt and pulley: On belt-drive Speed Queen washers, inspect the belt for wear and proper tension. Replace if glazed or loose.
- 5. Transmission diagnosis: If all above parts are good and there is still no agitation, the transmission may have failed in agitation mode. This is a complex repair usually done by a technician.
