Possible Causes
Pilot not lit (standing pilot models), Tripped FVIR/flammable vapor sensor, Closed gas shutoff valve, Failed gas control valve/thermostat
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: If you smell gas, do not attempt to light the heater. Leave the area and call your gas supplier or fire department.
- 1. Check gas shutoff: Ensure the manual gas valve near the heater is parallel to the pipe (open).
- 2. Pilot status: On standing pilot models, remove the access cover and verify the pilot flame is lit. If out, follow the lighting instructions on the heater label exactly. Hold the pilot button long enough to heat the thermocouple.
- 3. FVIR reset: Some A.O. Smith models have a flammable vapor sensor or resettable device. If the status light indicates FVIR lockout, the gas control may need replacement and the area must be checked for flammable vapors.
- 4. Thermostat setting: Confirm the gas control knob is not set to VACATION or OFF.
- 5. Professional diagnosis: If the pilot will not stay lit or the burner never comes on despite a lit pilot, the thermocouple or gas control valve may be defective and should be replaced by a technician.
