Possible Causes
Demand exceeding heater capacity, Incorrect dip switch configuration, Faulty flow sensor calibration, Partially closed gas valve limiting input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power and gas before changing internal settings.
- Reduce demand: Close some hot water fixtures and see if the error clears. Alpha tankless units have a maximum flow rate; exceeding it can trigger protection.
- Check configuration: Verify dip switch or parameter settings on the Alpha control board match the gas type, altitude, and model capacity per the installation manual.
- Inspect flow sensor: Ensure the Alpha flow sensor is clean and installed correctly (see E12 procedure).
- Gas input: Have a technician verify gas input and manifold pressure to ensure the unit can reach rated output.
If E17 recurs under normal usage, have an Alpha technician confirm sizing and configuration.
