Possible Causes
Excessive system pressure, No expansion tank on closed system, Faulty T&P valve, Overheating due to thermostat failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: The T&P valve is a critical safety device. Do not cap or plug the discharge pipe.
- Check temperature: Measure hot water temperature at a faucet. If above 140°F (60°C), reduce the Alpha thermostat setting and test thermostats/sensors.
- Check pressure: Use a pressure gauge to monitor pressure during heating cycles. If pressure spikes, install or service a thermal expansion tank.
- Test T&P valve: Lift the test lever briefly to flush debris. If it continues to drip or will not reseat, replace it with a properly rated valve.
- Inspect discharge line: Ensure the discharge pipe is properly sized, unobstructed, and terminates safely.
If the valve opens fully or frequently, have a professional evaluate for dangerous overheating or overpressure conditions.
