Possible Causes
Rusted Alpha tank shell, Failed weld seam, Corroded drain valve, Leaking element gasket
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power and gas. Close the cold water supply and relieve pressure by opening a hot tap.
- Identify source: Use a flashlight to inspect around the drain valve, element gaskets, and plumbing connections. Dry the area and watch for fresh water.
- Tighten fittings: Gently tighten the drain valve and element bolts if seepage is present.
- Check T&P discharge: Ensure the temperature and pressure relief valve is not discharging into the drain line (see separate T&P fault).
- Tank leak: If water is seeping from the tank body or insulation, the Alpha tank is failed and must be replaced.
Do not continue using a leaking tank; replace the water heater to prevent flooding or rupture.
