Possible Causes

Failed outlet thermistor, Loose sensor clip on outlet pipe, Damaged sensor wiring, Control board sensor input failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power and allow hot water lines to cool before handling sensors on piping.

  • 1. Locate outlet sensor: On some American Water Heaters models, an additional thermistor is clipped to the hot water outlet pipe or mounted in a well. Remove insulation to access it.
  • 2. Inspect mounting: Ensure the sensor is firmly clipped to the pipe or fully inserted into its well, with good thermal contact. Re-secure if loose.
  • 3. Check wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control, looking for damage or loose connectors. Reseat the connector.
  • 4. Measure resistance: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance at room temperature, comparing to the manufacturer’s chart. Replace if out of range.
  • 5. Control evaluation: If a known-good sensor still results in E11, the control’s sensor input may be defective and the gas control valve/control board assembly may require replacement.
