Possible Causes

Depleted anode rod, Corroded steel tank, Iron in water supply, Bacterial growth in tank

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Allow water to cool before working on the anode. Use proper lifting techniques; anodes can be heavy.

  • 1. Flush tank: Drain several gallons from the drain valve until water runs clearer.
  • 2. Inspect anode rod: Shut off water, relieve pressure, and remove the anode rod from the top of the tank. Replace if heavily consumed (less than 1/2 inch core remaining).
  • 3. Evaluate tank age: If the heater is old and rust persists, internal tank corrosion may be advanced; replacement of the heater may be the only long-term solution.
