Possible Causes
System leak, Faulty expansion vessel, Dripping pressure relief valve, Air vent leakage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Allow the system to cool before working on pressurised components.
Steps:
- Inspect for visible leaks: Check all radiators, valves, and pipework for damp patches or staining.
- Check PRV discharge: Look at the PRV discharge pipe outside. If it is wet or dripping, the PRV may be passing water.
- Test expansion vessel (basic): With the system depressurised, tap the expansion vessel. A completely waterlogged vessel will sound dull. A technician can check and recharge the air side.
- Monitor pressure: After topping up, note the pressure cold and hot. Large swings suggest expansion vessel issues.
Note: Expansion vessel recharging or replacement and PRV replacement should be done by a professional.
