Possible Causes

No gas supply or gas valve closed, Defective hot surface igniter or spark igniter, Faulty gas control valve (ICON or Honeywell), Blocked burner orifice

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you smell gas, do not attempt repair. Shut off the gas at the manual shutoff valve, turn off electrical power, ventilate the area, and contact your gas utility or a licensed technician.

Step-by-step checks:

  • Verify gas supply: Confirm the manual gas shutoff valve to the heater is fully open. Make sure other gas appliances in the home work (stove, furnace). If none work, contact the gas supplier.
  • Power cycle the control: Turn the gas control knob to OFF (or set the control to OFF and disconnect power) for 5–10 minutes. Restore power and set to ON/desired temperature. Observe if the igniter glows or sparks and if the burner lights.
  • Inspect the igniter: Remove the burner access cover. Visually inspect the hot surface igniter or spark igniter for cracks, heavy white deposits, or broken wires. If damaged or not glowing/sparking during a call for heat, replace the igniter assembly.
  • Check burner and orifice: With gas off, remove the burner assembly. Clean the burner ports and main orifice with a soft brush and compressed air. Do not enlarge the orifice. Reinstall carefully.
  • Gas control valve test: If igniter operates but no gas is heard and burner never lights, the gas control valve may be defective. Verify 24V (or appropriate control voltage) is present at the valve output during ignition (qualified person only). If voltage is present but no gas flow, replace the gas control valve.

When to stop: If you are not trained to work with gas controls or cannot verify ignition safely, stop and call a licensed technician. Incorrect gas work can cause fire, explosion, or carbon monoxide poisoning.
