Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off gas and power before removing burner components. Allow the heater to cool completely.
Steps:
- Inspect flame sensor: Remove the burner assembly. Locate the flame sensor rod (often combined with igniter on some models). Clean the metal rod gently with fine steel wool or emery cloth to remove oxidation. Do not sand excessively.
- Check alignment: Ensure the flame sensor tip is positioned directly in the main burner flame path when reinstalled. Bend only slightly if needed.
- Verify ground: Confirm the burner assembly has a solid metal-to-metal contact with the combustion chamber. Tighten mounting screws. Check the green ground wire from the control to the burner bracket.
- Check burner cleanliness: Clean burner ports and ensure a strong, blue flame pattern. Weak or lifting flames can cause poor flame sensing.
- Test operation: Restore gas and power, then call for heat. Observe ignition and confirm the burner stays lit without the code returning.
If problem persists: The flame-sense circuit in the gas control valve may be defective. Replacement of the gas control valve / ignition control is typically required and should be done by a qualified technician.
