Possible Causes
Failed ECO/high-limit switch, Thermostat stuck closed causing overheating, Sediment buildup causing localized overheating, Faulty gas control valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: High-limit trips indicate overheating. Turn off gas and power. Allow the tank to cool completely before working on it.
Steps:
- Reset ECO (if manual reset type): Some Bradford White models have a manual reset ECO button under the access cover. Press firmly to reset. If it immediately trips again, do not continue to operate.
- Check thermostat setting: Ensure the temperature dial on the gas control valve is not set excessively high. Set to 120°F–130°F for normal use.
- Flush sediment: Sediment at the bottom of the tank can cause hot spots. Connect a hose to the drain valve, shut off cold supply, open a hot faucet, and flush until water runs clear. Be cautious: water may be hot.
- Inspect gas control valve: If the heater overheats despite normal settings, the thermostat in the gas control valve may be stuck. Replacement of the gas control valve is required.
Note: Repeated ECO trips require professional diagnosis to prevent scalding or tank damage.
