Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power at the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester. Water in the tank may be hot.
Steps:
- Access upper thermostat: Remove the upper access panel and insulation to expose the thermostat and ECO.
- Reset ECO: Press the red reset button on the upper thermostat. If it clicks, it was tripped. If it trips again soon, investigate overheating causes.
- Check wiring: Tighten all screw terminals. Look for burned or discolored wires and replace as needed.
- Test thermostat/sensor: With power off, measure continuity across the thermostat contacts and resistance of any attached sensor. Replace the upper thermostat assembly if readings are out of spec.
If you are not comfortable working inside an electrical panel, contact a licensed electrician or water heater technician.
