Possible Causes

Tripped flammable vapor sensor, Actual flammable vapor event near heater, Damaged or contaminated FV sensor, Faulty gas control interpretation of sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Critical safety: A flammable vapor sensor trip may indicate gasoline or solvent vapors were present. Eliminate all ignition sources and ventilate the area. Do not reset or bypass safety devices if vapors are still present.

Steps:

  • Remove ignition sources: Ensure no gasoline, paint thinner, or other flammable liquids are stored near the heater. Move them to a safe, ventilated location.
  • Inspect FV sensor: Locate the flammable vapor sensor at the base of the heater. Check for contamination (lint, dust, liquid spills). Gently clean around it; do not submerge or soak the sensor.
  • Reset procedure: Some models allow a reset sequence via the gas control knob and status light. Follow the Bradford White service manual exactly. If the sensor is out of spec, it must be replaced.

Important: If the FVIR system has tripped, many models require replacement of the flammable vapor sensor and sometimes the gas control valve. This should be done by a qualified technician.
