Possible Causes

Excessive tank pressure, Overheating water, Failed T&P valve not sealing, Thermal expansion with no expansion tank

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: The T&P valve is a critical safety device. Do not cap or plug the discharge pipe. Water may be extremely hot.

Steps:

  • Check temperature setting: Ensure the thermostat is not set too high. Reduce to 120°F–130°F.
  • Test T&P valve: Lift the test lever briefly to flush debris, then release. If it continues to drip, the valve may be faulty and should be replaced.
  • Check system pressure: Install a pressure gauge on a nearby faucet. If pressure exceeds 80 psi or rises significantly when heater runs, install or service a thermal expansion tank and pressure-reducing valve.

Always replace a suspect T&P valve with the correct Bradford White-rated part. If you are unsure, hire a licensed plumber.
