Possible Causes
Corroded steel tank, Failed weld on heat exchanger (tankless), Leaking drain valve, Internal piping leak
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and gas, and close the cold water supply. Do not continue to operate a leaking heater.
Steps to check:
- Dry the area and identify the exact source of the leak using a flashlight.
- If water is seeping from the drain valve, try tightening the cap or replacing the valve.
- If water is coming from the tank seam or internal heat exchanger, the storage tank or heat exchanger is compromised and the unit typically must be replaced.
- Check all accessible unions and fittings; tighten or re-seal with appropriate thread sealant if they are the source.
Note: A rusted-through tank is not repairable; plan for replacement of the CTC water heater.
