Possible Causes
Thermal expansion in closed system, High incoming water pressure, Overheating thermostat, Defective T&P valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: The T&P valve is a critical safety device. Do not cap or plug it. Use caution around hot discharge water.
Steps to check:
- Measure static water pressure; if above 80 psi, install or service a pressure reducing valve.
- If your system is closed, install or service a thermal expansion tank on the cold inlet.
- Verify that the water heater is not overheating; check thermostat settings and operation.
- If the T&P valve continues to drip after pressure and temperature are corrected, replace the T&P relief valve with a properly rated unit.
