Display shows E16 and unit will not heat; elements do not energize (electric models)

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and verify with a meter that no voltage is present before touching any element terminals.

Steps to check:

• Remove the access covers over the heating elements on the CTC electric water heater.
• Inspect wiring to each element for burns or loose connections. Tighten or replace as needed.
• Test each element with a multimeter for continuity between the terminals and for no continuity to ground. Replace any open or grounded heating element.
• Check any inline thermal cutoffs or thermostats mounted on the element flange for continuity. Replace if open.
• If elements and wiring are good but E16 remains, the element relay or triac on the main control PCB may be defective and the board will need replacement.
