Possible Causes
Open heating element, Tripped element thermal cutoff, Burned wiring to element, Faulty element relay on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and verify with a meter that no voltage is present before touching any element terminals.
Steps to check:
- Remove the access covers over the heating elements on the CTC electric water heater.
- Inspect wiring to each element for burns or loose connections. Tighten or replace as needed.
- Test each element with a multimeter for continuity between the terminals and for no continuity to ground. Replace any open or grounded heating element.
- Check any inline thermal cutoffs or thermostats mounted on the element flange for continuity. Replace if open.
- If elements and wiring are good but E16 remains, the element relay or triac on the main control PCB may be defective and the board will need replacement.
