Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power at the breaker and allow the heater to cool for at least 30–60 minutes before working on it.
Reset and inspection steps:
- Remove the access cover to reach the thermostat and safety cut-out (often mounted on the heating flange assembly).
- Locate the manual reset button on the safety thermostat (usually a small red or black button). Press it firmly until you feel a click.
- Check for signs of overheating on the wiring and terminals (discoloration, melted insulation). Tighten any loose screw terminals.
- Drain the heater partially if necessary and remove the heating flange to inspect for heavy limescale on the heating element and sensor pockets. Thick scale can cause hot spots and overheat trips.
- Descale the heating element and flange using an appropriate descaling solution or replace the complete heating flange assembly if the element is badly corroded.
- Verify that the safety thermostat and high-limit sensor have proper contact with the tank or well and that their wiring is intact.
- Reassemble, refill the tank completely, bleed air from hot water taps, and only then restore power.
If E2 reappears quickly, the high-limit sensor or control board may be defective and should be tested and replaced by a professional.
