Possible Causes
Failed outlet thermistor, Loose outlet sensor connector, Damaged outlet sensor wiring, Control board sensor circuit fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power at the breaker and close the water supply before opening the unit.
- Locate the outlet sensor: Remove the front cover. Find the outlet temperature sensor mounted on or near the hot water outlet manifold.
- Check the connector: Unplug and firmly reconnect the outlet thermistor at both the sensor and control board ends (if accessible). Clean any visible corrosion with electrical contact cleaner (power OFF).
- Inspect wiring: Look for kinks, cuts, or burn marks on the outlet sensor harness. Replace the harness if damaged.
- Test the sensor: With a multimeter, measure resistance across the thermistor leads and compare to EcoSmart’s spec. An open circuit or near-zero ohms indicates a bad sensor.
- Reassemble and test: Restore water and power, then run hot water. If E2 returns, replace the outlet thermistor.
- Escalation: Persistent E2 with a known-good sensor suggests a defective main control board; contact EcoSmart support or a service technician.
