EcoSmart Insufficient Heating Capacity / Underheating

Water is warm but not hot enough, even with EcoSmart temperature set to maximum.

Possible Causes

Inlet water temperature extremely low, Flow rate too high for heater size, One or more elements failed, Undersized EcoSmart model for home demand

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Most checks can be done with power on, but testing elements requires power OFF.

  • Check setpoint: Confirm the EcoSmart set temperature is at the desired level and not limited by a child lock or external control.
  • Reduce flow: Partially close the hot water valve at the fixture or install low-flow aerators/showerheads to reduce flow and increase temperature rise.
  • Seasonal expectations: Recognize that very cold winter inlet temperatures reduce maximum achievable outlet temperature for a given heater size.
  • Test elements: With power OFF, test each heating element for proper resistance. Replace any open or weak elements.
  • Capacity check: Compare your EcoSmart model’s rated GPM at your inlet temperature to your actual demand. If undersized, consider upgrading to a larger model or adding a second unit in series.
