Possible Causes

Burned-out main heating element, Loose wiring at element terminals, Tripped manual reset thermal cut-out on element flange

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Switch off the circuit breaker and verify no voltage at the heater terminals with a multimeter before touching any wiring. Water inside the tank may be hot.

Steps to check and address E01:

  • Access the element: Remove the front/bottom plastic cover of the Eldom heater (usually held by screws). Locate the main heating element flange with two power terminals and a ground connection.
  • Inspect wiring: Check for burned, loose, or discolored wires on the element terminals. Tighten loose screws and replace any melted connectors.
  • Check the manual reset thermostat: Many Eldom flanges have a red reset button on the safety thermostat. Press it firmly until it clicks. If it immediately trips again, the element may be faulty or there is overheating.
  • Test the element: Disconnect the wires from the element terminals. Use a multimeter on resistance (Ω). A typical 2 kW–3 kW Eldom element should read roughly 15–30 Ω. If it reads open (OL) or near 0 Ω (short), the element is defective.
  • Replace if needed: If the element is faulty, drain the tank (close cold inlet, open hot tap, open drain). Remove the flange bolts and pull out the heating element assembly. Install a compatible Eldom replacement element with new gasket, tighten evenly, refill, and bleed air before powering on.

When to call a technician: If the new element trips the safety thermostat again or the wiring is burned extensively, have a qualified technician inspect the control board and wiring harness.
