Possible Causes
Exhausted magnesium anode, Long-term corrosion of steel tank, Operating without proper pressure relief
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Immediately switch off power and close the cold water inlet. A ruptured tank can fail catastrophically.
Steps:
- Identify leak location: If water is seeping from welded seams or through the insulation at the top/side, the inner tank is likely perforated.
- Do not attempt welding: Household repair of a pressurized enamelled tank is unsafe and not recommended.
- Drain and decommission: Drain the heater completely and disconnect electrical and plumbing connections.
- Replace unit: Install a new Eldom water heater of appropriate capacity. Ensure the magnesium anode is checked periodically to extend tank life.
This fault is not economically repairable; replacement is the only safe option.
