Water heater does not heat; display shows E1 shortly after a heating request
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the water heater at the circuit breaker and close the cold water supply valve before working on the unit. Confirm no voltage is present with a multimeter.
Steps to check and correct:
- 1. Power-cycle the unit: Turn the breaker OFF for 5 minutes, then ON again. If E1 reappears, continue.
- 2. Inspect the inlet temperature sensor (NTC): Remove the front cover. Locate the inlet thermistor on the cold water inlet pipe or heat exchanger inlet (often clipped or screwed into a small well). Check for corrosion, broken leads, or water intrusion.
- 3. Test the sensor with a multimeter: Disconnect the NTC from the harness. Measure resistance at room temperature and compare to Electrolux specifications (typically 5–20 kΩ at 25°C; consult service manual). If reading is infinite (open) or near 0 Ω (short), the sensor is defective.
- 4. Inspect wiring harness: Trace the two sensor wires back to the main PCB. Look for pinched, burned, or loose connectors. Reseat the connector on the PCB and sensor.
- 5. Replace the inlet NTC sensor if faulty: Remove the retaining clip or screw, pull out the sensor, install the new one with a small amount of thermal compound if specified, and secure it firmly.
- 6. If sensor and wiring test good: The temperature input circuit on the main control board may be defective. Replacement of the PCB is typically required and is best done by a qualified technician.
When to call a professional: If you are not comfortable testing resistance or accessing the PCB, or if replacing the sensor does not clear E1, contact an authorized Electrolux service center.
