Possible Causes

Water in leak detection tray, failed leak sensor, condensation dripping into sensor area, plumbing leak above heater

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power at the breaker and close the cold water supply valve to the heater.

Steps to address E5/LEAK:

  • Inspect for leaks: Look around the base of the heater, the leak tray, and all plumbing connections (cold inlet, hot outlet, T&P valve, drain valve) for signs of water.
  • Dry the sensor: If you find standing water in the leak tray, dry it thoroughly with towels and a sponge. Allow the sensor area to dry completely.
  • Check plumbing fittings: Tighten any loose unions or threaded connections. Repair or replace leaking flex lines or fittings.
  • Test the leak sensor: Disconnect the leak sensor from the control board and check for continuity. Some sensors are normally open and close when wet; refer to GE documentation. Replace if it reads as triggered when dry.
  • Restore water and power: Turn the cold water supply back on, check for leaks, then restore power. If the code returns without visible water, the sensor or control board may be faulty.
