Possible Causes
Heating element shorted to ground, damaged wiring insulation, moisture inside junction box, faulty ground fault detection circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power at the breaker. Do not restore power until the fault is corrected.
Steps to address E9:
- Inspect for moisture: Check the top junction box and wiring compartments for water intrusion. Dry thoroughly and correct any source of leaks.
- Test elements to ground: With wires removed from each element, measure resistance from each terminal to the metal tank. Any reading other than infinite resistance indicates a ground fault; replace the element.
- Check wiring: Inspect all internal wiring for nicks, cuts, or melted insulation contacting the tank or metal parts. Repair or replace damaged wires.
- Control board: If no ground faults are found but E9 persists, the ground fault detection circuit on the control board may be defective and require replacement.
