Possible Causes
Defective condenser thermistor, sensor knocked loose from condenser tubing, wiring harness damage, failed control board input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power at the breaker before opening the unit.
Steps to resolve F5:
- Access condenser area: Remove the upper cover to locate the condenser coil (usually wrapped around the tank or in the upper section).
- Find the condenser sensor: Look for a thermistor clipped to the condenser tubing or tank wrap with a two-wire harness.
- Inspect and secure: Make sure the sensor is firmly attached and not dangling. Reattach with the original clip or thermal tape if needed.
- Check wiring: Trace the harness back to the control board, looking for abrasions or pinched sections. Repair or replace as needed.
- Test resistance: Measure sensor resistance and compare to the GE chart. Replace if readings are abnormal.
- Control board evaluation: If the sensor and wiring are good, the control board may be misreading the sensor and require replacement.
Tip: Label connectors before unplugging multiple sensors to avoid mixing them up.
