Possible Causes
Failed compressor, defective compressor start relay or capacitor, loose compressor wiring, control board compressor relay failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power at the breaker. High voltage is present at the compressor terminals.
Steps to troubleshoot F7:
- Inspect wiring: Remove the upper cover and access the compressor terminal box. Check that all spade connectors are tight and not burned.
- Check start components: Locate the compressor start relay and capacitor (if used). Look for bulging, leaking, or burned components. Replace any visibly damaged parts.
- Test compressor windings: With power off and wires removed from the compressor, measure resistance between the three terminals (C, R, S). Compare to GE specifications. Open or shorted windings indicate a failed compressor.
- Control board output: If the compressor and start components test good, check for output voltage from the control board to the compressor when a call for heat pump operation is present. No output suggests a bad control board.
- Reassemble and test: After replacing any faulty parts, restore power and monitor operation to see if F7 clears.
Note: Compressor replacement and sealed system work must be performed by an EPA-certified technician.
