Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power (electric) or set gas control to OFF (gas). Close cold water supply if leak is significant.
Steps to address top leaks:
- Dry and inspect: Wipe the top of the heater dry, then observe where water reappears.
- Tighten fittings: Use two wrenches to snug hot and cold flex connectors and dielectric nipples. Do not overtighten and crack fittings.
- Check anode rod: Inspect around the anode rod hex head for seepage. Tighten or replace the anode rod with a GE-compatible part if leaking.
- Replace corroded parts: If nipples or flex lines are heavily corroded, replace them using Teflon tape and/or pipe dope rated for potable water.
Note: If water appears to seep from under the top cover with no visible fitting leak, the tank itself may be leaking and the heater will need replacement.
