Possible Causes
Weak or failed thermocouple, dirty pilot orifice, insufficient gas pressure, faulty gas control valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: If you smell gas, do not attempt to light the pilot. Leave the area and contact your gas utility.
Steps to address pilot issues:
- Clean pilot assembly: Turn gas control to OFF and allow time to cool. Remove the burner access cover and gently clean the pilot orifice and surrounding area with compressed air.
- Check thermocouple position: Ensure the thermocouple tip is properly positioned in the pilot flame path.
- Replace thermocouple: If the pilot lights but goes out when you release the control knob, replace the thermocouple with a GE-compatible part.
- Gas control valve: If a new thermocouple does not solve the issue, the gas control valve may be defective and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
