Possible Causes
Excessive tank temperature, excessive pressure from closed system and no expansion tank, failed T&P valve, thermal expansion from water heater operation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Hot water discharge can cause burns. Do not cap or plug the T&P valve.
Steps to address T&P discharge:
- Check temperature: Verify thermostat settings are at 120°F. Overheating can cause T&P to open.
- Check system pressure: Have a plumber measure static and dynamic water pressure. If over 80 psi or if pressure spikes when the heater runs, an expansion tank may be required or existing one replaced.
- Test T&P valve: Lift and release the test lever briefly to flush debris. If it continues to drip, replace the valve with a GE-approved, properly rated T&P valve.
- Install/replace expansion tank: On closed systems with check valves or PRVs, install a properly sized thermal expansion tank on the cold inlet.
