Possible Causes
Loose hot or cold water nipple, Failed dielectric union, Corroded steel nipple, Cracked plastic lined nipple
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power or gas and close the cold water supply valve. Allow the heater to cool before working on piping.
- Dry and inspect: Wipe the top of the Giant heater dry and observe where water reappears—around hot, cold, or T&P connections.
- Check tightness: Use a pipe wrench to gently tighten the leaking nipple or fitting. Do not overtighten and damage the tank.
- Reseal fittings: If tightening does not stop the leak, drain the tank below the top fittings, remove the leaking nipple, apply fresh pipe thread sealant or Teflon tape, and reinstall.
- Replace corroded parts: Replace any heavily corroded nipples or dielectric unions with new Giant‑approved fittings.
- Refill and test: Open the cold supply, purge air at a hot tap, and check for leaks before restoring power or gas.
