Water leaking from around the top or side of a Gledhill cylinder
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Isolate electrical power immediately if water is leaking near electrical components. Turn off the cold water supply to the cylinder to limit leakage.
Steps:
- Identify source: Dry the area and observe carefully to pinpoint the exact origin of the leak (fitting, boss, seam, etc.).
- Tighten fittings: For minor weeps at compression joints, gently tighten the nut by a small amount. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the fitting.
- Immersion gasket: If water is seeping around the immersion heater, the gasket may have failed. Drain the cylinder to below the immersion level, remove the element, fit a new gasket, and refit.
- Shell leaks: If water appears to be coming through the cylinder body or welded seams, the cylinder is likely beyond repair and must be replaced.
Important: Do not operate the heater with an active leak. Water ingress can damage the PCB and create an electric shock risk.
