Possible Causes
Overheating due to stuck thermostat relay, dry-fired element, loose thermostat mounting causing poor tank contact, scaled elements causing localized overheating
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power at the breaker before opening any panels.
- Access upper thermostat: Remove the upper access panel and insulation. Locate the red reset button on the high-limit thermostat (ECO).
- Reset ECO: Press the red button firmly until it clicks. If it immediately trips again after power is restored, do not keep resetting—find the cause.
- Check thermostat contact: Ensure the upper thermostat is flat against the tank with its spring clips engaged. A loose thermostat can misread temperature and cause overheating.
- Inspect elements: Look for signs of dry-firing (bulged or split elements). Replace any damaged heating elements.
- Check for scale: Heavy mineral buildup on elements can cause hot spots. Consider replacing elements and flushing the tank if scale is severe.
- Control board/thermostat test: If ECO continues to trip, the thermostat or electronic control may be stuck on. Replace the upper thermostat assembly or main control board as specified for your Kenmore model.
- Restore power and monitor: After repairs, restore power and monitor water temperature to ensure it is within normal range (typically 120–140°F depending on setting).
