Possible Causes

Loose ribbon cable between display and main control, failed user interface board, moisture intrusion into control panel, main control board communication failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn OFF power at the breaker before removing the front control panel.

  • Remove control cover: On models with a front display, remove the screws securing the control panel and gently pull it forward.
  • Inspect connections: Locate the ribbon cable or harness between the user interface (display board) and the main control board. Reseat both ends firmly.
  • Check for moisture: Look for condensation, rust, or water tracks inside the control housing. If moisture is present, dry the area thoroughly and identify/fix any leaks from plumbing above the heater.
  • Visual board check: Inspect both boards for burnt components or corrosion. Replace any obviously damaged boards.
  • Replace UI board if needed: If reseating cables does not clear E06, replace the Kenmore user interface / display board with the correct part number for your model.
  • Control board replacement: If a new UI does not resolve the issue, the main control board is likely faulty and should be replaced.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the control panel, restore power, and verify that the display responds and E06 is cleared.
