Possible Causes
Closed gas shutoff valve, air in gas line, dirty or misaligned igniter, failed hot surface igniter or spark igniter, faulty flame sensor, low gas pressure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF gas at the shutoff valve and switch the control to OFF before servicing. If you smell gas continuously, evacuate and call the gas utility—do not attempt repair.
- Check gas supply: Verify the manual gas shutoff valve near the heater is fully open (handle parallel to the pipe). Confirm other gas appliances work.
- Power reset: Turn the control knob or power switch OFF for 5 minutes, then back ON and attempt ignition.
- Inspect burner window: Look through the sight glass while the unit attempts to ignite. Note if you see a spark or glowing igniter and whether the burner lights briefly.
- Clean igniter and flame sensor: Turn gas and power OFF. Remove the burner assembly. Gently clean the flame sensor rod and igniter with fine steel wool or emery cloth to remove oxidation.
- Check igniter resistance: For hot surface igniters, measure resistance with a multimeter; an open circuit indicates a failed igniter. Replace with the correct Kenmore igniter assembly.
- Reinstall burner: Reassemble the burner and ensure the gasket is intact and the manifold is tightened to the specified torque to prevent gas leaks.
- Restore gas and test: Turn gas back ON, purge air by following the manufacturer’s lighting procedure, and observe ignition. If E10 persists, the gas control valve / electronic gas valve may be defective and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
