Possible Causes
Blocked exhaust vent, failed flue temperature sensor, collapsed vent liner, excessive vent length or improper fittings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF gas and power. A blocked flue can cause carbon monoxide buildup—ensure adequate ventilation and use a CO detector.
- Inspect vent system: Follow the vent from the heater to the termination. Look for crushed sections, disconnections, or signs of overheating (discoloration, melting).
- Check termination: Outside, clear any obstructions such as leaves, nests, or snow from the vent cap.
- Flue sensor check: Locate the flue temperature sensor on the draft hood or vent connector. Inspect wiring and connections. If the sensor is cracked or deformed, replace it with the correct flue temperature sensor.
- Verify vent design: Compare your installation to the Kenmore installation manual for maximum length and number of elbows. Correct any improper venting.
- Reset and test: After clearing obstructions and replacing any faulty sensor, restore gas and power, then monitor operation. If E13 persists, have a qualified technician evaluate for hidden vent restrictions or control board issues.
