Possible Causes
Actual tank leak, leaking plumbing connection above heater, faulty or wet leak sensor pad, condensate from heat pump dripping into pan
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power and, for gas models, turn gas control to OFF. Water leaks can cause electrical hazards and structural damage.
- Inspect for leaks: Look around the base of the heater, at the T&P relief valve, drain valve, and all hot/cold connections for dripping water.
- Check leak sensor: Locate the leak sensor (often in the drain pan or attached to the base). If the pan is wet from a minor spill or condensation, dry the area and the sensor thoroughly.
- Tighten fittings: Gently tighten any seeping threaded connections on the hot and cold nipples using appropriate tools. Do not overtighten plastic fittings.
- Check T&P valve: If the temperature and pressure relief valve is weeping, verify system pressure and expansion tank function. Replace the T&P relief valve if it will not seal.
- Tank leak assessment: If water is seeping from the tank body or welded seams, the glass-lined tank has failed. The entire water heater must be replaced.
- Reset leak alarm: After drying and correcting the source, reset the leak detection system per the manual and restore power/gas.
